Finding rest in the midst of cultural chaos

Self-reliance is a natural instinct when it comes to navigating difficult circumstances. We have learned to lean on what works according to our own understanding. This, of course, produces anxiety, stress, and worry because we are left to solve our issues on our own, and in our own strength.

Another way we are tempted to deal with difficult circumstances is to immediately source the “best thinking” from others on a topical idea, in order to determine the best way forward. Although the wisdom in a multitude of counsel is important, and there are experts in fields of study that exceed our expertise, it is important to know what God is saying to us and how He can lead and direct us to our next right steps.

We need the insight and understanding that comes from God, alone, and we need to be willing to follow however He leads us.

When we find ourselves confronted with a reckoning moment, like we do in culture today, we will either REACT or RESPOND.

When we REACT, we are doing what instinctually comes to us when confronted with a challenge. This is usually connective to emotion and is not birthed from a place of preparedness. When we RESPOND, we are still surprised at the arrival of uncertain circumstances, but we are equipped to engage because we've tapped into the resources and training that will help us handle what comes at us.

As followers of the way of Jesus, too often we find ourselves reacting to the issues that confront us in culture. Because we haven’t been connecting to the source of life in God’s Spirit, we are only left to do what instinctually comes to us in our humanity. But, when we are listening to the voice of God in prayer, meditation, study, and communion with Him, we have the resource of spiritual insight and wisdom to guide our steps.
